Apple Pay Officially Arrived in India: Supported Banks, Devices, Merchants and UPI Limitations

Apple Pay officially arrived in India on September 30, bringing Apple’s contactless payment service to Indian customers. One of the main drawbacks at launch is that UPI payments aren’t available yet.

At the moment, users in India who are using Apple Pay can add Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards and also use them for contactless payments at participating merchants.

Apple Pay Now Available in India

Apple Pay lets users make payments using their Apple devices, and users do not need to carry their physical card.

By the time of official arrival in India, Apple Pay supports Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards. Apple plans to add support for additional banks and cards down the road.

Which Apple Devices Work with Apple Pay?

Apple Pay is accessible on multiple devices in India, such as:

iPhone

Apple Watch

iPad

Users can verify their payment using Touch ID, Face ID, or their device passcode, as it depends user is using which device.

Mac compatibility is coming soon as well.

Touchless Payment Options Available

As we look towards Apple Pay contactless payment capability, users can hold their supported Apple device near a compatible payment terminal to finish a purchase. This means that it doesn’t require physically swiping or inserting a card when a merchant accepts contactless payments.

PayU Is Expanding Apple Pay to Additional Merchants

PayU is working on expanding Apple Pay across its merchant network in India. This will help Apple Pay to increase its functions with many digital and physical merchants.

Examples of merchants that are supported include

Croma

Tata 1mg

Zomato

Blink it

And many more

The number of merchants supported is expected to increase in the upcoming months.

UPI is one of the most common ways in India to make digital payments and access services. But Apple Pay doesn’t support UPI payments at this time. This means users can’t use Apple Pay as a UPI app to scan a UPI QR code.

But for now, Apple Pay in India mainly works with supported bank cards.
